What is Azure Service Platform?

Azure Service Platform is Microsoft’s propriety hybrid cloud offering that enables the development and hosting of application on Microsoft’s datacenters. It is a combination of IaaS and PaaS services that enables in the development, deployment, management, monitoring and maintenance of cloud / web applications.  It supports open source REST, SOAP and XML for accessing applications & backend cloud resources.

Brief Description of Azure Service Platform

Azure Service Platform is primarily a hybrid cloud platform combining both IaaS and PaaS under one service platform. It provides a suite of different on demand cloud services for developing applications that are built, deployed and hosted entirely on Microsoft’s Azure platform. The applications built on it  are hosted & executed in Windows Azure OS. Although there are different components/ services of Azure Service Platform but the key components include;

Windows Azure- provides the compute, storage and the basic operating system.

Fabric Controller – service that manages the whole provisioning of compute, storage and other resources to the hosted applications

Microsoft SQL Server – for creating and delivering database services
