How does Remote Terminal Unit works?

Remote terminal unit (RTU) is basically a multipurpose device which has the architecture of a computer because it has all of the essential components of a computer system i.e. CPU, Monitor, Processing Power, Memory etc.

It is an intelligent controller and a more sophisticated form of Programmable Logic Circuits (PLCs).

It is capable of controlling and monitoring system’s activities without the intervention of a user.

is a master controller system which is used to control and monitor other devices or systems.

Another common term used for Remote Terminal Unit is Tele control Unit.

 

How and where Remote Terminal Units are used?

These are mostly used in a Distributed and Supervisory Control Systems and environments.
