Remote terminal unit (RTU) is basically a multipurpose device which has the architecture of a computer because it has all of the essential components of a computer system i.e. CPU, Monitor, Processing Power, Memory etc.

It is an intelligent controller and a more sophisticated form of Programmable Logic Circuits (PLCs).
