Remote terminal unit (RTU) is basically a multipurpose device which has the architecture of a computer because it has all of the essential components of a computer system i.e. CPU, Monitor, Processing Power, Memory etc.

It is an intelligent controller and a more sophisticated form of Programmable Logic Circuits (PLCs).

It is capable of controlling and monitoring system’s activities without the intervention of a user.

Another common term used for Remote Terminal Unit is Tele control Unit.
